Researcher in the Textual & Visual Pattern Analysis group (TVPA).

Profile

I'm a member of the TVPA group, where I do research in image categorisation and its applications to document retrieval and information navigation. Most of my current activities are related to PinView, an European Union research consortium which aims to create a proactive personal information navigator.

Before joining Xerox Research, I have worked on a project for Kannada character recognition from natural scenes at Microsoft Research, India. The problem was approached with bag of visual words using six different feature extractors.
I have also worked as a research scientist at Sharp Labs of Europe, where I was involved in projects related to image processing techniques for novel display systems.
I have done my DPhil (PhD) at the Active Vision Lab, in the University of Oxford. My thesis is about 3D Visual Tracking of Articulated Objects and Hands. This work focused on real-time methods that could be applied for human-robot interaction or augmented reality systems.
Prior to my DPhil, I did a masters on feature selection and applications to face recognition, at the Creativision group, USP. My MSc thesis got a national award from the Brazilian computer science society.

I regularly review papers for Elsevier, IEEE and IEE journals, such as: Pattern Recognition; Trans. on Image Processing; Image and Vision Computing; Trans. on Signal Processing.
